O'Neil was a student at high school when she took part in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. The quality of her singing impressed jury, and she received a promotion to the 100th round. O'Neil received high praise from the jury. But she lost badly in the top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked, and they suggested that people vote for Melissa as the contestant with the best ability to sing. O'Neil was always delivering top performance since then, never finished lower than the top three.
