O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. Her family raised her by their parents in Wheaton in Illinois and then graduated in 1981, with a degree from the Wheaton North High School. She appeared in some commercials prior to her move from Wheaton, Illinois to Los Angeles. O'Grady made her debut in the industry by modeling at Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She starred in the 1988 romantic comedic film, She's Having a Baby. She was later a regular in ABC drama China Beach with Dana Delany. Other guest appearances include programs for TV, independent movies, and numerous others. Her first big role was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC police show NYPD Blue. Her role as the tall, blonde squad secretary was performed from 1993 to 1996. In each of those years, she received one of the Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance of the Drama Series. In 1995, she won the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in Drama Series along with the cast.
